Hand-Carved Wooden Dogon Granary Door From The Dogon People Of Mali This beautifully carved wooden panel served both a structural and deeply spiritual purpose Traditionally used to seal grain storage buildings.The carvings often depict ancestral figures, geometric patterns, or mythological symbols intended to protect the food stores inside.It typically features a functional, carved sliding wooden lock Functional Purpose: In Dogon villages, these doors functioned as shutters to secure and protect the window-like openings of mud-brick food storage buildings (granaries). They guarded crucial survival crops like millet from animals and the elements Spiritual Protection: Beyond keeping physical pests out, the low-relief carvings made the space sacrosanct (sacred). The artwork represents a spiritual line of defense to ward off bad omens and theft Symbology: The repeating rows of geometric human forms depict Nommo or ancestral spirits. Loading assistance is NOT available. Some items may be located on a 2nd floor or out-building. Invoices are emailed to winning bidders once the entire sale has closed. If full payment is not received before the pick-up date and time, the items will be forfeited, and bidding privileges revoked. Pick-up address will be on the invoice e-mailed after the auction closes. All items not picked up during the designated times will be considered abandoned and may be donated or resold. At our sole discretion, an alternate pick-up time may be arranged. If this is possible, an appropriate fee may be charged. A 15% Buyer's Premium and Sales Tax are added to the winning bid amount when invoiced. Sales tax is waived for licensed re-sellers that provide a current Re-sellers Permit. We make every effort to describe lot items as accurately as possible. Expect normal signs of wear associated with antiques, vintage, and used items. We do not list every flaw.
